A guiding imperative of the VREF Ph.D. Student Workshop will be to seek ways in which research can be transformed into actionable knowledge that improves the global state of urban transport and that builds capacity in current and future transport professionals. Discussions will be based around three themes: sustainable urban freight for livable cities; affordable personal transport, informal and formal; and institutional innovation in urban transport.
In addition, it is hoped that the Workshop will enable exchanges between Columbia Ph.D. students and Ph.D. students and young researchers affiliated with the ten VREF Centers of Excellence and other supported VREF projects. To this end, the Sustainable Development Doctoral Society at Columbia’s Earth Institute is a co-sponsor of the Workshop as well. Overall, the goal is stimulate future high value added and interdisciplinary collaborations which seek to improve sustainability in cities through advancements in sustainable transport.
